The Song of Ande Ande Lumut

The song sung in the video is tittled "Ande Ande Lumut," played in Keroncong music, one of native Indonesian music style from Java. The song tells a conversation between a mother and her son, Ande Ande Lumut. There are three girls who come for a competition to marry the son, and the mother, each time a girl comes, tells her son to come down and meet the girl.

However, hough the first two girls are beautiful as the mother describes in the song, Ande Ande Lumut doesn't want to come down. In the original story, that's because those girls has allowed a bad character named Yuyu Kangkang to kiss them in return for helping them crossing the river.

Finally, the third girl shows up, yet the mother isn't fond of her appearance. She looks so ugly. However, Ande Ande Lumut wants to come down and marry this girl this time. She didn't let Yuyu Kangkang to kiss her and even get rid of him using her magic weapon.

The story tells us about the importance of one's purity, that the beauty of character is considered more valuable than outward look (of course, we all want both inward and outward beauty though ^_^). In our culture, things are beautufied only in terms of religious worships, not in daily lives. We believe in the strength/beauty of characters, not of appearances.

Indonesia is culturally a rich country, and that's one of the reasons why I love her so much! Come to Indonesia and see it for yourselves. :)
